Guinea Pig Cages

Many consider Guinea pigs to be the perfect small pet, especially for a growing family.  It’s easy to create a comfortable, warm environment for your new furry friend to live.

However, most cages that people use are far too small.

When starting out, we strongly recommend getting a basic cage.  Getting the basics down with a simple, easy to use cage, will allow you to be more experienced when spending more money on your new pet.

You also want to avoid cages with wire floors or bottoms.  Not only do they hurt their feet, and are uncomfortable, they also do not trap any excess bedding from falling on the floor.

So, choose a cage based on the following factors:

  1. Size. The most important factor in determining the cage is ultimately the size.  You need approximately 7.5 square feet for a single guinea pig, 10.5 for 2, and approximately 3 square feed for every additional guinea pig after that.
  2. Quality & Materials. Guinea pigs are not good climbers, but they are rather big.  So, you want to choose a cage that has solid construction.  It doesn’t need to have a top, but a top is preferred because the guinea pig will throw bedding out of the cage without it.
  3. Portability.  Where will you store the cage?  Where will you wash the cage?  How will you get it between those two places?  Many guinea pig cages have wheels that allow you to easily transport the cage from one place to another.

Taking these things into consideration, you should make a good choice for you and your family.

We’ve broken down our choices of cages into three categories:  starter, luxury, and mobile.  Click what you’re interested in looking at.
