Purr…

Guinea pigs are very vocal. They express a myriad of emotions through certain noises, such as joy, fear, anger, pleasure and the like. And yes, they do purr.

A purring guinea pig is generally a happy guinea pig, it is experiencing something enjoyable. You might be petting your guinea pig at the time, or you might be giving it a treat, such as a carrot. But keep in mind, there are different kinds of purring.

Purring is also known as rumblestrutting. Male guinea pigs will rumblestrut at each other to show dominance in the cage. This kind of purr is really fast and high pitched. Guinea pigs may also purr if they do not like where you are touching them, which is usually accompanied by them trying to get away from you (a helpful hint). A very short purr following by a freeze probably suggests that a strange noise was heard, and it suggests an element of fear. Purring can also be a mating sound, a bit like a rumble.

As a general rule, if your guinea pig starts walking around slowly and rubbing up to things, wiggling their put when you pet them and purr slowly, than they are liking the spot where you pet them.
