Keeping Up Appearances – Guinea Pig Style Part 2

Apart from their fur, the grooming of guinea pigs is also concerned with their nails. Guinea pigs are very active and hence need to be able to be mobile and agile. And for this they need their nails at an optimal length. If their nails get too long, guinea pigs can no longer step with a secure grip. If they grow very long, this can lead to injuries. You need to check on your guinea pigs’ paws and nails regularly to avoid potential problems and catch any injury or infection so that it can be treated asap.

Active guinea pigs will naturally shorten their nails. The more you can give your guinea pigs the opportunity to run and climb (always close to the ground, of course), the better for their nails and their general health. If possible, allow your guinea pigs some time outside to roam, ideally in a secured outdoor pen. Alternatively, rocks or branches left in the cage provide guinea pigs with opportunities to shorten their nails.

If the nails get too long, these natural methods will not work anymore and you will have to cut their nails. Cutting a guinea pigs nails is not an easy process, so you might want to consider having a veterinary technician handle it for you. If you are willing to give it a go, there are a few things to consider. First, it is easier with two people. One who will carefully but securely hold the guinea pig in a secure grip, while the second person carefully cuts each nail. Second, you want to be careful so as not too cut too much to avoid a bleed. Use a baby nail clipper or special nail scissors for guinea pigs to make your task easier.
