Getting Started…
The Child's Right of Passage - A Guinea Pig
With all the buzz around Guinea Pigs lately (did you see the movie yet?), we thought it was important to replace our regular blog with a bit of “starter” information about Guinea Pigs with information that will help potential guinea pig owners decide whether they are going to make the commitment to guinea pig ownership.
While many kids will want to run out and get a guinea pig, the reality of Guinea Pig ownership will be far different than the movie.
Here’s what you need to know in a nutshell.
- There are two kinds of guinea pigs. Long hair and short hair. Long hairs require more maintenance. Long hair means they will need more baths & will need brushing.
- Clipping toenails. Monthly clippings are a necessary chore. You’ll use your common fingernail clippers.
- You should get at least 2 guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are social animals and will want companionship. But, like humans, not every guinea pig gets along. You might need 2 rounds to find the right pair.
- Guinea Pigs have to be tamed. Because of this, small children should not be the exclusive caregivers for these pets–especially at the beginning.
- Housing. Bigger is better. 7 square feet for the first and 3 feet for each additional.
- Diet. They will need Vitamin C drops or a Vitamin C tablet every day. They eat pellets, hay, vegetables, and occasional fruits (only certain types).
- Exercise. They need it daily. Obstacle courses, PVC pipes, really anything. Just get them out of their cages and let them stretch.
If, after that, you still want to get a Guinea Pig, then you’ve come to the right place. We review and find the best guinea pig products. To start exploring, click on the links to the left. You should start with finding the cage, then buy accessories to fill out the cage, based on size.
The ownership and care of a guinea pig is an adventure, and a right of passage for many children. With care, a guinea pig will become a cherished member of your family and a companion for many years to come.
